How do we sustain the teambuilding high?

Last May 8, 2019, HR officers, trainers, entrepreneurs and consultants gathered in Makati for a night of learning and explored what it would take to sustain the teambuilding high.

One of the biggest challenges that companies face is sustaining the momentum, motivation and energy that team building programs bring to the team. What we find is that when employees go back to their workplace, once they return to their normal routines and experience the usual stress and pressures that come with the work, the learning and insight that was shared in the team building program takes the back seat.

So what can be done?

First, it is important to redefine what team building is and what its purpose is. For Team Journeys, we see the purpose of “team building” as:

A) All about helping teams become more effective and

B) It’s a fun and innovative way to strengthen work culture and address critical needs to help the business. (See our Team Bonding vs Team Building article here)

Secondly, we need to reframe how we see “team building”. For us, team building is and should be an every day effort and therefore should be incorporated into our day to day operations.

Lastly, sustaining the team building high requires a purposeful approach to incorporate quick activities that can be used and implemented within common business practices. (See: 3 teambuilding activities you can do during your next meeting)

The rest of the session was filled with activities and sharing of insight among the participants. Groups discussed best practices, tools and techniques that can be used to bring into meetings, company events and other common processes that can be leveraged to help their teams become more effective.

Below are some excerpts from insight shared by the participants:

“Team Bonding goes hand-on-hand with Team Building. Each has its own purpose depending on the stage of the company. The most surprising discovery is that every company has a common issue but is addressed uniquely by others. Long-term vision is key.“

“You can integrate team building in everyday activities in the office. It's not just a 1-day thing.”

“I learned about things or activities you could use or start for your everyday team building. I realized that everyday there's an opportunity to get to know your team.“
